What is Halotherapy?

In the age of coronavirus, respiratory health has never been more important. The nurturing and care of our airways is fundamental to our overall health, it promotes healthy oxygen saturation levels, mood regulation and boosts your overall immunity.

So what is a salt room and halotherapy?

Let’s start with the latter, first. Halotherapy is simply a name to describe the act of intentionally breathing in aerosolized, micro-particles of salt. While it can be done outside of a salt room, you will get the best results using a full salt room.

A salt room is exactly what it sounds like, a room filled with salt. Our salt room at Body Concepts, Mankato is designed to mimic salt caves found all across the world. Mining salt from caves was the original way we discovered the benefits of being surrounded by and exposed to salt. A prominent Polish doctor in the 1800s observed that salt miners were less likely to suffer respiratory ailments than their non-salt mining counterparts. Similar health benefits were also noticed among those taking shelter in salt caves during WWII. They were the original pioneers of halotherapy without even knowing it.

In short, a salt room is just a room made to mimic a natural salt cave. At body concepts we use naturally mined, Himalayan salt for our room. We have a beautiful salt wall along with fine salt on our heated floor, to allow for a comfortable and immersive experience. Our specialized ventilation system circulates the air to allow for maximum effect.

What are the benefits of Halotherapy?

Halotherapy is a cleansing practice for your respiratory system. While science hasn’t exactly confirmed the mechanisms by which halotherapy benefits its users, it does show significant promise to those suffering from allergies, COPD, asthma and other respiratory ailments.

It clears pollen and toxins from your lungs and nasal passages along with reducing inflammation, a key component to better respiratory health.

Especially in the age of COVID, we don’t recommend coming in if you are actively exhibiting symptoms of a respiratory sickness, but the benefits of salt room therapy can be beneficial after you’ve recovered or simply as a preventative measure.

Relaxation is a must in halotherapy.

One of the best aspects of sitting in a salt room is that it forces you to take some time off and relax. The ambience in our salt room is quiet and soothing, allowing you to take some “me time.” This very well could be the best part about it! Science has long backed up relaxation as a way to reduce stress and help your body recover from your day-to-day life. We’re happy to provide you with a place to clear your lungs, relax and help support your immune system!
